WCAG worked with WEG and ArtWeeks to put on a Wildlife and Nature stop at St Leonard's Church - an ArtWeeks first!
The artists were all inspired by nature, and exhibits included two film installations, including “Where Red Kites Soar” by Nicola Schafer, which was shot entirely at Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve, featuring the nature that is right on our doorstep. Sculptures made with wood from the reserve linked perfectly with the theme.
Visitors also had the opportunity to try their hand at various art activities and workshops inspired by nature, including gelli printing, cynotypes, botanical casts and stone painting. The tree trail proved very popular, offering the chance to find out about the beautiful trees in the churchyard. Over the years many interesting trees have been planted, making the churchyard a very special place for nature.
The churchyard is now being actively managed, both for nature and for the community, by Watlington Environment Group. There was a display explaining the work that is being undertaken and we were very pleased to have such a positive response to the effort that is being made.
Nature is important in our own gardens as well, and we had a display of art with a purpose for wildlife, for example, bird boxes, bird baths, bird feeders, and bird tables - you might consider also adding hedgehog houses, bee hotels or hanging baskets with pollinator-friendly flowers! A photography display showed the flowers and insects from wildlife-friendly gardens in Watlington. A pond is one of the best things you can do for wildlife in your garden, so if you are interested in joining our Ponds Together group to get support for putting a pond in your own garden, do contact us at
Thank you to the 22 volunteers from WEG and WCAG and the artists who made putting this event on possible.
